The thought of exercising can be overwhelming. Start small and build up gradually. Good options for low-intensity exercise you can do every day include:
There is no one size fits all approach to exercise for depression. Discuss it with your doctor. They will recommend appropriate exercise options based on your personal circumstances.
Exercise boosts your general wellbeing. It can help to improve your sleep and can also relieve stress. All of these factors make it great for people trying to treat depression without antidepressants.
There is no magic bullet diet for the treatment of depression. But it’s good to avoid the foods that are highly processed, like deli meats, ketchup, breakfast cereals, pizza, burgers, and chips.
Foods and drinks that are high in sugar will also not help your depression. Try alternatives to sugary soda, fruit juices, white bread, frosting, and cakes.
Many natural, delicious foods you can enjoy containing vitamins and minerals that support your brain.
All of these foods are full of natural goodness. Sticking to a healthy diet can also help control your weight, supporting good mental health.
Studies have indicated that people with low vitamin D levels are at a greater risk of developing depression. Vitamin D supplements are commonly available. Discuss with your doctor whether this cheap supplement could help you.
Two less familiar supplements that may be helpful are S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e) and 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). Both can interact with other drugs prescribed for depression. Never take them without talking to your doctor.
Limited studies have shown that both SAM-e and 5-HTP can be effective in improving the symptoms of depression. However, more research is needed to understand better how they work and who they can help.
However, ketamine is a dangerous drug when not used correctly. The long-term effects have not been well studied. Currently, only one ketamine-based drug Spravato, is FDA approved. You can only take it at the doctor’s office and under supervision.
Treatment takes place in a hospital setting where an IV line is ran to administer medication and fluids such as an anesthetic and a muscle relaxant. This will help to minimize the impact of the seizures.
Once you are under the general anesthetic, the technician will place small electrodes on your head. Unilateral ECT involves applying an electric current to one side of the brain. A bilateral ECT applies currents to both sides of the brain. Doctors will monitor the seizure, but you will not be aware of it.
After the therapy is over, patients are taken to the recovery room. Most patients suffer from confusion following the treatment, which can last for a few hours. Treatments are usually given two to three times a week for three to four weeks. The doctor will advise how quickly you can resume normal activities.
ECT is an effective treatment for severe depression. Although it is not fully understood how it helps, it induces chemical changes that reduce depression symptoms.
It’s important to complete the course, and follow-up treatments may be necessary. For a less invasive alternative, you could consider TMS.
You will need surgery to implant the VNS device. It is about 1.5 inches in diameter and is implanted in the chest. It works like a pacemaker by sending out regular electrical impulses. It is programmed by your doctor and can be changed as needed.
A second incision in the neck allows the thin wire to run from the device to the vagus nerve in the neck. The electrical impulses transmitted to the vagus nerve are in turn transmitted to the brain.
Studies indicate that more than 50% of patients report improvement in symptoms. It is safe, and there are relatively mild side effects while treatment is taking place. It does not seem to be as effective as ECT but has fewer side effects.
During treatment, you sit in a comfortable chair. The technician will apply a magnetic coil to your head. It stays in place for between 19 and 37 minutes.
For optimal results, it is best to attend five days per week for about six weeks. There are very few symptoms while having TMS therapy. Most people experience no symptoms. For the few who do, these are mild and usually wear off after a few treatments.
TMS is not painful and is well tolerated by over 95% of patients. Once the session is over, you can go about your day as usual, with no specific precautions to take.
Researchers looked at TMS for people with major depression. They found TMS causes a significant reduction of depressive symptoms compared with those not receiving treatment.
It also has the advantage of being a safe, FDA-cleared treatment that all major insurers cover. It makes it an excellent choice for those examining alternative depression treatment options.
